Relax and Read

When I visited Mrs. Klan's class today they were getting ready to do some reading. Their classroom will continue to be transformed into a castle this month.

As can be seen in the other picture Mrs. Sali's students were relaxing while they read. Mrs. Sali was reading with a small group as the rest of the class read independently.

District Literacy Support Teacher, Bev Craig, stopped by today and she was telling me how pleased she is with the reading program we have at GES. It is a tribute to our staff and something that we should be proud of.

It hope that everyone has a great weekend! Enjoy your family time and spend some time reading with, or along side, your child(ren).

Until next week.

Estimating

Mrs. Griffith's was glowing after the Canucks won another game last night.

When I stopped by her kindergarten class she had her students show me how they were estimating. I was really impressed with the depth of understanding that the children had. They demonstrated their estimations using blocks and they shared this with me. Bravo!!

Until later.

Another busy day

It was a beautiful sunrise to start the day. After enjoying the beauty it seemed to be full go all day. Aside from a new student orientation, cutting up oranges for some students to start their day, meeting with a few teachers, fielding a few phone calls, sharing my views about respect with a few students, supervising recess and lunch, attending to a few first aid issues, visiting a few classes, teaching a PE class, meeting with teachers again and coaching our Boys' Basketball practice, it was a pretty quiet day.

I have had a few glitches uploading pictures as of late, so check out the Flickr Photostream for updated pictures.

Have a great evening.

Until tomorrow.

Busy Day

It has been a very busy day today-- it seems as if the post- New Year honeymoon is now over and some of the behaviour that students displayed today was less than acceptable. Dealing with this is part of the job and it can be a challenge at times. We try to make sure that all of our staff and students are treated with respect. Our students need to feel safe and cared for and we try to ensure that everyone feels this way.

I hope to get into few classes before the end of the day.

Until later.

Basketball Season is Upon Us

The GES Girls' Basketball Team had their first practice today at lunch, while the Boys' Team had their first practice after school today-- I was very impressed with all 28 boys that practiced. We spent most of the time on fundamentals and only 10-12 minutes in scrimmages at the end of practice. The boys were great and they picked up the drills quite well. I am really encouraged with the boys that have little experience that have come out. Fun, fundamentals and teamwork are our keys. If today's practice is an indicator, we should have a great season .

Mrs. Fitchell is coaching the girls' team, which has a practice after school tomorrow.

We will also be having a weekly basketball clinic for Grade 3-5 students (boys & girls) Mondays 3-4 pm.

It should be an exciting couple of months of basketball, as our annual 3-on-3 tournament will be starting soon.

Academically everyone is back on track. I visited a lot of classrooms today and students are working hard. We have had SD 46 Math Helping Teacher, Bob Benmore, in working with Mrs. Fitchell's class using base ten blocks. If your child is in her class ask them what they learned today.

Have a great evening.

Until tomorrow.

Spring-like Day

It felt like a spring day at lunch today-- the students were active playing soccer, basketball, tag, frisbee, or playing on the adventure playground.

Our RCMP Liaison Officer, Cst. Colin Bissel stopped by to say hello to our students. He has been very proactive in developing a positive relationship with our students. Bravo Cst. Bissel!

Until later.

Mrs. Sali's Class Group Presentations

I stopped by Mrs. Sali's class this afternoon to see how she was making out and her students were presenting information that is found on maps. It was apparent that some students did an excellent job with this cooperative activity, while others had room for improvement.

Mrs. Sali seems to be getting along quite well. It will take a bit of time for her to adjust to the time and weather change, but I am sure that things will work out well for her and her husband.

We wish Mrs. Servos-Sept all the best in Australia-- the weather is around 30 degrees Celsius in Queensland from what I have heard. Enjoy!

Have a great evening everyone.

Until tomorrow.
