Blue Sky & Sunshine

We finally had a break in the weather and Mrs. Sali has seen her first Canadian sunshine. It is so nice to see the good weather for the weekend.

I do hope that you get a chance to enjoy the weekend with your family and friends.

Mrs. Sali Introduced at Primary Assembly

Mrs. Sali was introduced to the primary students this morning at their Primary Assembly. She mentioned the Mrs. Servos-Sept is now on holiday enjoying a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean (Queensland, Australia)--similar to Florida. Unfortunately the weather has been very wet since Mrs. Sali arrived in Canada and she indicated that she was hoping for snow-- all in due time.

Grade Five students Play Ukuleles

Our Grade five students have just started playing ukekeles. Mr. Angelus has them reading music, playing ukeklele and singing along! They did a great job when I stopped by their class today.

Just a reminder-- please ensure that students have a change of clothing (sweats will do) just in case they get wet when they are out at recess or lunch.

Dream Box Math and K is for Koala

Miss Owen's class is piloting a math program called Dream Box. The children seem to enjoy the program which is another way to become better at Math skills.

When I visited the Kindergarten room I saw that today was K Day-- yes K is for koala!

Science World Scientist to visit GES

Mrs. Knecht just let me know that Kate Henderson, a former Gibsons Elementary student, is coming to our school from Science World next Tuesday. She is a scientist/teacher working at Science World and they offer a program where the send some of their scientists out to the schools.

She'll be giving presentations in Ms. Knecht's, Mrs. Fitchell's and Mrs. Kranenburg's class.

The Sky is Falling and Words from "PLANETS"

Mrs. Fitchell's class was busy working on The Sky is Falling novel study, when I stopped by their class this morning. They have finished reading the novel and were discussing the theme when I was in their class. When I went to Mrs. Kopek's class they were trying to write down as many words as possible from the word planets-- the students were very proud of the number of words they were able to build.

I finished the morning off teaching a grade one PE block. The students did a great job on ball activities that led to a modified game of sideline European handball.

A Great Day Considering the Weather

Despite the wet weather we had a great day today. Students were engaged in their learning throughout the day.

Mrs. Kranenburg's students were finishing up some poetry in the computer lab when I stopped by today. They are becoming quite proficient using the computers.

Ms. Perry's students had just finished up an Art project on penguins when I visited their class and Mrs. Klan's class was working at various centers when I stopped by-- it looked like the Princess was just getting into her dress when I pulled out my camera!

After school I had basketball clinic, for our grade 3, 4 and 5 students, which went really well. The turnout was excellent-- we had over twenty students. Thanks to Mr. Josephson for helping out. We will continue to run this program on Mondays until the Spring Break.

Relax and Read

When I visited Mrs. Klan's class today they were getting ready to do some reading. Their classroom will continue to be transformed into a castle this month.

As can be seen in the other picture Mrs. Sali's students were relaxing while they read. Mrs. Sali was reading with a small group as the rest of the class read independently.

District Literacy Support Teacher, Bev Craig, stopped by today and she was telling me how pleased she is with the reading program we have at GES. It is a tribute to our staff and something that we should be proud of.

It hope that everyone has a great weekend! Enjoy your family time and spend some time reading with, or along side, your child(ren).

Estimating

Mrs. Griffith's was glowing after the Canucks won another game last night.

When I stopped by her kindergarten class she had her students show me how they were estimating. I was really impressed with the depth of understanding that the children had. They demonstrated their estimations using blocks and they shared this with me. Bravo!!

Another busy day

It was a beautiful sunrise to start the day. After enjoying the beauty it seemed to be full go all day. Aside from a new student orientation, cutting up oranges for some students to start their day, meeting with a few teachers, fielding a few phone calls, sharing my views about respect with a few students, supervising recess and lunch, attending to a few first aid issues, visiting a few classes, teaching a PE class, meeting with teachers again and coaching our Boys' Basketball practice, it was a pretty quiet day.
