Bands Collaborate

The Elphinstone Secondary Grade 8 Band joined our Grade 7 Band this afternoon for a pre-Christmas session. This collaboration strengthens the bond between the teachers (Mr. Angelus & Mr. Kellough) and the two bands. It was great to see the large number of former GES students playing in the ESS Band.

They sounded awesome. I have posted a snippet of Christmas Cheer on our Flickr Photostream.

And the Band Plays On.....

I stopped by Mr. Angelus' Band class this morning and watched and listened, as he worked with the various groups of the band. I was really impressed, as was ESS Music Teach Tom Kellogh who was visiting this morning.

Cold, Wet and Windy Weather Upon Us

The cold, wet and windy weather did not damped the spirits of our students today-- maybe it was because of the early dismissal. We had parent/teacher interviews this afternoon and we will have them again tomorrow. If you are unable to make it to the school and you would like to discuss your child's academic performance please contact your child's teacher at the school to set up an alternative time. A phone call may be all that is needed.

We have a PAC Meeting at 7:00 pm this evening (in the Staff Room) and I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Akimbo and the Elephants

After listening to a student reading in Mrs. Klan's class I stopped by Ms. Kranenburg's class and spoke with some students about the novel that they are reading, Akimbo and the Elephants. Students were paired up and read before completing comprehension questions. The students indicated that they really enjoyed the story.

It's recess time - time to go outside!

Report Cards

Report cards will be distributed today. Remember that the Report Card is just a snapshot of the students performance for the first two months of school. It should provide you with some information that will enable you to help support your child's learning.

For your information Parent/Teacher Interviews will be next Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 18th & 19th). Students will be dismissed at 1:35 pm.

Parents of Intermediate students are asked to sign up for interview times-- the forms are outside the office on the left side. If you are unable to attend during the scheduled interview times, I encourage you to contact your child's teacher so you can set up an alternative time.

I trust that you will have a great weekend.

Mr. Sullivan will be covering for me on Monday and Tuesday, as all SD 46 Principals will be attending a conference in Vancouver.

Primary Assembly

I heard some beautiful music coming from the gymnasium after recess-- I went to the gym and it was a Primary Assembly. I was busy taking care of other issues and I missed most of the assembly. Mrs. Servos-Sept spoke about being socially responsible regarding garbage. Her class had previously done a research project abut the amount of garbage that we had on our school grounds. We are going to be tackling this issue even more in the upcoming weeks.

Guided Reading & Mental Math

Ms. Thomson's Guided Reading group proudly showed off the books they were making when I stopped by today. When I visited Mrs. Klan's class they were working on mental math questions with the answer of 13. If your child is in her class ask them to explain their question to you.

The fish in the net in Mrs. Klan's room have been made by the students in Art. What a great idea!

Water Colour & Geometry

When I visited Mrs. Kopek's class today students were working on their water colour projects-- dinosaurs. The picture above jumped out at me. I was really impressed with the work of the entire class. (more pictures can be seen via the flickr photostream).

Mrs. Hourigan's Math class had a guest helper today, John Prichard. The students were working on an introductory geometry unit when I stopped by.

I have a PE class this afternoon which should be good fun. We will be doing some work with balls, as well as using a parachute.

What a Glorious Day

We have been blessed with another great day of weather. The rain last night left the blacktop a bit wet but it did not dampen the spirits of our students at recess. The level of activity was great. The mountains are turning white, a strong indicator that winter is just around the corner. Mr. Detwiller informed me that Whistler is opening up for the ski season this weekend.

Remembrance Day Assembly at GES

We had our Remembrance Day Assembly at GES today. The choir and band were outstanding. Cam B. and Zoe B. did a great job reading In Flanders Field . Kate N. and Hunter M. also did an excellent job reading their poems of peace. Elizabeth Livery spoke on behalf of the veterans and we saw a heartfelt video as well.

I suggested that it would be a good idea for all to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony tomorrow. Lest we forget.
